Los Tuxtlas and Santiago

The region of "Los Tuxtlas" is known as the Switzerland of Veracruz ("Suiza Veracruzana") for its mountains and perennial greenness. It is a land of volcanoes, lakes, forests and beaches. But it is also a land of ancient traditions, fiestas, poets and singers. The locals are extremely friendly and welcoming.

The local trade is cattle. So you can try an excellent variety of free-range meat. But you can also enjoy a variety of seafood dishes from the region such as the traditional seafood soup. Try the local speciality of "Garnachas" (fried tortillas with meat), "Platanitos Rellenos" (stuffed bananas), "Tamales" (corn pasta filled with meat or vegetables, steamed in banana leaves), or sweets such as "Naranjas Rellenas de Coco" (oranges stuffed with coconut), "Pastelitos de Coco" (coconut biscuits), and many others. Most of these are available for less than a pound freshly made on the local market of Santiago Tuxtla.
